Maddie phoned grandpa one day after school,
“Grandma’s birthday’s tomorrow, let’s do something cool.”
“We can bake her a cake and buy her some candy.”
“I’m sure she would think that’s really quite dandy.”
“That sounds neat,” grandpa said, “it really sounds swell.”
“We’ll keep it between us, so be sure not to tell.”
“We’ll make a surprise party like never before.”
“We’ll put balloons and streamers all over the door.”
“Let’s also have hotdogs along with some chips.”
“We can even make some of her favorite dips.”
Maddie replied, “When can we go buy the stuff?”
“Do you think tomorrow would be soon enough?”
The next day grandpa and Maddie drove to the store.
They filled up their basket with goodies galore.
Frosting and sprinkles were tossed into the cart,
And chocolates and candy in the shape of a heart.
The mustard and ketchup were in the next aisle
Alongside the relish that stood single file.
Hotdogs and buns were piled on high
“Look at all our stuff,” Maddie said with a cry.
As they unpacked the groceries, Maddie took out the flour.
“I can make the cake in under an hour.”
“Don’t worry,“ she said, “I’ll even clean up the mess.”
As she wiped her hands all over her dress.
“I really know how, I’ve done this before,”
As the oil she was pouring dripped onto the floor.
As some eggshell dropped in, Maddie grabbed it in haste,
“Don’t worry,” she said, “it won’t ruin the taste.”
When all was mixed in Grandpa put the pan in to bake.
While Maddie sat down to wait for the cake.
“I’ll go cook the hotdogs,” grandpa wisely replied
And he went out to the grill while she stayed inside.
Once the cake had cooled, the fun really began.
She opened the frosting and took the cake from the pan.
She decorated the edges with the toppings they bought
And wrote a sweet poem on the top with great thought.
When Grandma arrived they both yelled “surprise”
As Maddie unveiled the cake that she had devised.
While grandpa looked stunned, Grandma said with a shout,
“A cake with relish sprinkles, that’s my favorite no doubt.”
“And a poem in ketchup so sweet and so nice”
“Quick, cut me a sliver, no, make it a slice.”
When the hotdogs were ready Grandpa passed them around
He looked for the mustard but it couldn’t be found.
“Oh grandpa,” sighed Maddie, “that’s not what it’s for.”
“Use the candy and chocolate that we got from the store.”
“Give me your hotdog, I’ll fix it for you.”
And she spread on some icing and a candy or two.
Grandpa looked scared as he took a small bite
“Delicious,” he declared with a shout of delight.
I think I’ll have more once I finish this one.
Just make sure you add sprinkles on top of the bun.
Contented and full from all that she ate,
Grandma sighed happily, “This has been really great.”
“It’s not over yet,” Maddie said looking merry,
“There’s also some ice cream topped with a cherry.”
She brought grandma a scoop that was yellow and creamy,
“The flavor is mustard. Isn’t that dreamy?”
Maddie looked up as grandpa crashed down to the floor,
“Oh my,” exclaimed Maddie, “I should’ve told him there’s more.”
